Bedside Crib and Travel Cot
Bedside cribs look similar to a bassinet and are attached to the sides of the bed. They usually have a single side that can be put down for easy reach and some come with an incline that's ideal for babies who have reflux.

Easy to put together
Bedside cribs are usually easy to put together, and are on the smaller side so they are able to be placed neatly beside your bed. They are also lighter, which makes them more portable. Georgina one of our MFM home test participants, praised the Maxi-Cosi Lora for being "super straightforward to build, with clear instructions and simple zips." The crib can be used as a portable crib and comes with a convenient bag. It has multiple mesh windows that allow for ventilation, and the adjustable height makes it can be adapted to any mattress.
Some bedside cribs feature the option of a side panel that can be adjusted so that you can be able to easily reach your baby without having to get out of bed. This is a great option for breastfeeding mothers, or those who want to be with their baby all night long but don't want to risk co-sleeping (which is associated with an increased risk of SIDS).
Most models have a built-in rocking function. This can be a very relaxing experience for your baby and aid them fall asleep. Some cribs feature a reclining position that can be beneficial if your child has reflux or colic. This position should only be used with supervision. You should consult an expert in health or a doctor before attempting it.

It has five different height adjustments that can be adjusted to your bed. Our MFM home test participants praised the Joie Roomie Go for being comfortable, easy to assemble and compact. The Graco Play Yard, also known as a Pack and Play, is another popular option. It was shortlisted for the 2022 Mother&Baby Award.
Cozy and comfortable
You can keep an eye on your child from the peace of your bed by using the bedside crib. It's a great option for a new mum recovering from a c-section, as you can easily lift baby to your side for nappy or night feeds changes without having to get out of bed. The most cozy cribs come with mesh sides that allow you to see your baby through.
Some cribs lower the barrier completely, allowing the option of sleeping together without the associated risks (check that your chosen model is in compliance with the most recent safety standards however). Some cribs allow you to lower the barrier but then pop it up again after you have lifted baby out. This is better for parents concerned about their child rolling off their mattress.
The Luah was awarded the Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, or Moses Basket in 2021, is designed to be attached to bedsteads and divans but requires longer straps (check your specifications to be sure that your bed can be accommodated). It's a spacious design that has an opening side panel as well as a unique perforated base which creates an air cushion to boost airflow. Additionally, it has an integrated reflux setting and the 360 swivel, so you can rotate the crib to fit your baby's position.
If you're looking for something a little smaller, the Tutti Bambini CoZee is a stylish option with oak legs and smart fabrics that will match your decor. It's also easy to assemble. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was capable of putting it together quickly and without requiring any instructions. It's also a great travel cot that folds flat and slipping into a bag for easy storage.
The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also on the larger side but is still relatively compact and easy to attach into your bed. Georgina found it easy to assemble too, although she did feel the zips could have been more clearly described on the instruction sheet.
Easy to clean
Look for cribs that come with mattress covers that can be washed in the machine while looking at cribs for bed or travel cots. This will keep it clean and free of dribbles, spills, and leaky diapers. You should also select one that is easily disassembled so you can clean and sanitise every nook and cranny.
This is vital, as it's the best way to be sure that all germs and dirt have been eliminated. Make sure that the sides of the crib are securely secured to ensure that your baby won't fall down or get trapped.
You'll also want to ensure that the crib is easy to clean and that it is a good fit for your bed. This is especially important if you're using a bedside crib for co-sleeping. They are designed to fit securely to the side of the bed for parents which allows parents to easily reach their infant throughout the night for feeding and comforting while maintaining the safety of separate sleeping surfaces.
Another thing to consider when selecting a crib for your bed is whether it comes with additional features you might find useful. For instance, some cribs come with the capability to rock (useful for babies who are fussy) or tilt, but remember that you should only make use of this feature with caution, as it can be risky if your child falls out.
You'll want to make sure that your crib or travel bed has a flat, firm mattress that fits comfortably into the frame. This will reduce the chance of SIDS because your baby's feet and head won't fall into any gaps or folds in the bedding.
It's a good idea buy a new mattress for the crib or travel cot rather than using one that was used previously or purchased second-hand. Used mattresses are more prone to lose their shape over time which increases the risk of SIDS. All new cribs must meet BS EN 1130:2019, the latest standard that imposes stricter requirements for secure and efficient sleep solutions.
Multi-faceted
A bedside crib (or co-sleeping crib, as they're sometimes referred to) is attached to your bed, allowing you to easily reach your baby at night without having to get out of your own sleeping area. They can be used as a standalone crib during the daytime. They usually have a side panel that can be moved down so you can see and touch your baby. Some have the option to keep the panel closed all night, which gives you the closeness and convenience of sleeping in a bed with your newborn however it reduces the risk of bed sharing. Some cribs can be transformed into an oversized travel cot. Other cribs come with additional features such as rocking, tilting, or converting into an older baby cot.
